Attended by Hon. Iván Medveczky, Hungary’s Deputy State Secretary for Relations with the South, the gathering was more than a commemoration; it was a powerful reminder of a nation’s unbreakable spirit.
In her remarks, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Hungary, Hon.Margueritte Nyagahura set the tone with clarity and conviction.
She described July 4 as a tribute to courage, dignity, and unity, values that rebuilt a shattered country.
“Thirty-two years later,” she said, “Rwanda stands as proof that a nation can rise from the ashes and choose unity over division.” Freedom, she reminded everyone, is a responsibility; unity, a daily commitment.
According to Hon. Nyagahura, Rwanda rose in every corner, including diplomacy, partnership among others.
In this regard, the Ambassador spotlighted Rwanda’s growing partnership with Hungary in education, water management, and technical cooperation, expressing strong commitment to further strengthening these ties.
On behalf of the Republic of Hungary, Hon. Iván Medveczky, delivered equally resonant remarks as Guest of Honour.
He hailed July 4, 1994, as the day courage triumphed over hatred and 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. Rwanda’s transformation, he noted, is “nothing short of a modern miracle” - from tragedy to a stable, innovative, and dynamic nation.
Medveczky praised the shared principles binding the two countries; respect for sovereignty, commitment to peace, and the belief that nations must shape their own futures.
The recent openings of Rwanda’s Embassy in Budapest and Hungary’s office in Kigali, he said, mark a deepening strategic alliance.
Kwibohora - “liberation” in Kinyarwanda - commemorates the day in 1994 when Rwandan Patriotic Front forces entered Kigali and ended the 100-day Genocide against the Tutsi. What followed was not merely military victory, but the re-birth of Rwanda.
From the ruins of division and unspeakable loss, the country chose reconciliation, rebuilding, and progress. Today, Kwibohora stands as an annual pledge: never again. It celebrates a people determined to build a secure, self-reliant nation rooted in unity and dignity.
